The new personal device policy allows students to use their own personal devices, such as iPads/tablets and laptops, at school to do their work. This can be a disadvantage to many students. Students might also have had their computers stolen or broken by others, making this unfair because many are still the ones paying the fees rather than the ones actually responsible for it. Students also might not have the money to be able to pay the fees, putting them into debt, making them unable to graduate, and before even starting the real world. Jaydenn Zavala, a freshman at LVHS, has stated, “I, honestly, think that it’s an unfair policy since only some students have been caught. It isn’t fair to the rest of the mindful students who don’t do that. A better policy would’ve been, if caught, to be sent to the administration office. It seems morally wrong and unjust to the other students.” He believes that this policy is unfair and that students should be given a second chance with the use of their devices. He’s also stated, “I feel conflicted about it. It makes sense as to why they would make that choice, but at the same time, students should feel and be respected as the adults we are growing up to become. I definitely feel this is because the students who used their personal device during the time were given the chance to be able to freely use technology without restrictions during their work time. I think it should be changed back to how it used to be. It would make most sense to change it back. I also think that if they were to bring it back, they could adjust the privilege, like certain disciplinary acts they should take if a student were caught doing something other than work.” Jaydenn explains that he thinks the policy should go back to how it was, but with a few conditions, when using personal devices. Personal devices also allow students to use more websites and applications without worrying about restrictions, which can help a lot of students with researching for their work, helping them finish early or on time, before the deadline.
